Schengen Visa

The term "Schengen" refers to the European Union's passport-free zone that encompasses most European countries. This area is recognized as the largest free travel zone globally.

The Schengen Area consists of 29 European nations that have eliminated internal borders, thereby facilitating the free and unrestricted movement of individuals. This expansive region covers approximately 4,718,084 km² and is home to over 448 million citizens.

A Schengen visa is a travel permit granted by member countries of the Schengen Area to nationals of third countries for short-term purposes, including tourism and business-related trips. Individuals holding a Schengen visa are permitted to visit all 29 countries within the Schengen Zone.

Which Countries Are Part of the Schengen Area?

The 29 Schengen countries are as follows: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

SHENGEN AREA MAP

A Schengen visa permits travelers to stay within the Schengen Area of Europe for up to 90 days within a 180-day timeframe. The specific duration of stay permitted is clearly stated on the visa sticker. The consular officer responsible for processing the visa application determines the visa's validity.

Schengen visas are categorized based on their duration and validity as follows:

1. Single-entry visa: This visa allows for a single entry into the Schengen Area, enabling the holder to remain for the number of days specified. Once the traveler exits, re-entry is not permitted.

2. Double-entry visa: This visa permits two entries into the Schengen Area. The total duration of stay across both entries must not exceed the number of days indicated on the visa sticker.

3. Multiple-entry visa: This visa allows for multiple entries into the Schengen Area throughout its validity period. However, the cumulative total of days spent during all entries must not surpass the number specified on the visa sticker.
